Improving Workplace Learning by Teaching Literature

_In a series of case studies based on work with professionals from industries in the UK, this volume demonstrates that the humanities are significant for this professional-managerial class. It shows how students make the transition into academic life, in particular, how they cope with transitional issues such as academic reading and writing and building their academic confidence. It explores how reflecting on practice improves performance and how it creates "reflective wisdom". Reflective thought and action, properly guided, will foster change in terms of academic confidence and encourage learning. Furthermore, offering reading from books such as Sinclair Lewis's Babbitt and excerpts from Dickens, James Baldwin and George Eliot as well as from more contemporary essayists such as Barbara Ehrenreich and Joanne Ciulla can shape the context in which learning takes place and help students become better communicators.§The volume focuses on the following:§§an integration of the humanities, specifically literature, into a work based curriculum;§a demonstration of how reflecting on practice improves practice;§an exploration of harnessing students' wisdom to effect organisational change;§the use of discussion in teaching;§case studies of organisations working with Middlesex University's Institute for Work Based Learning
