Science-policy interactions are gaining importance as reflected in international research projects and policies. This requires enhanced cooperation at international level and synergies which are not always put in place in practice. This book will highlight advances in science and policy in the area of hydrometeorological extreme events, and introduce further books of a series that will cover specifically different types of catastrophic events. The book, and the series as a whole, is very timely in that it will bring forward results of EU-funded projects as well as key policy milestones that are expected by 2015 (e.g. linked to the Hyogo Framework for Action, and the development of the first EU Flood Management Plan to be embedded into the Water Framework Directive's river basin management planning from 2015 onwards).Authors are internationally recognized experts in their respective fields, who have built-up worldwide networks in the framework of EU-funded research programs. This series will hence reflect the most recent science and policy advances in the field in a multidisciplinary fashion. Highlights are the role of historical research in studies of extreme events, science-policy interfacing, summary of international policies and initiatives (EU policies, UN Hyogo Framework for Action, IPCC), scientific state-of-the art on flash floods, droughts, storms, and discussions about costs of natural hazards, resilience and adaptation. This book will part of a new series provisionally entitled 'Hydrometeorological Extreme Events' . Further titles have been identified for inclusion into this series as follows; Economic Impacts of Hydrometeorological Events; Floods; Coastal Storms; Droughts; Resilience and Adaptation; Public Health and Hydrometeorological Events. The series will provide a multidisciplinary description of various scientific and policy features concerning hydrometeorological extreme events, edited by a global list of authors all at the forefront of their respective fields.
