Excerpt from First Annual Report of the Board of Directors: Of the McKean and Elk Land and Improvement Company to the Stockholders In their introductory report, presented soon after the organization of the Company under its charter, the stockholders received from the Board a general description of their estate, derived chiefly from the statements of surveyors and engineers who had independently, and at different times, made such explorations as were practicable in a remote and uninhabited wilderness. These earlier researches were, of necessity, to a great extent, superficial, but were sufficiently comprehensive to prove the existence of large bodies of minerals, and fully satisfy the proprietors of the great value of their entire estate, leaving for further determination the questions of the exact locality of each mineral bed, and the points, at which they might severally be opened for working to the greatest advantage. So long as the property was to be held in its entirety and unimproved, a general knowledge of the actual existence of its hidden treasures sufficed; but, as the time approaches when, by the completion of several projected lines of railway, its products will find easy avenues to market, it becomes both the duty and the interest of the Company to make preparations for the lease or sale of portions of its lands to individuals or associations desiring to establish mines or manufactures.
