In the first chapter of my work I give a brief §overview on word stress in general. §In the next chapter I discuss the quite unique §stress system of present day English by examining §one by one the separate word classes and also the §morphologically complex words. §In the following five chapters I discuss the §evolution of the English stress system, starting §from the "pre-English" - the Germanic - period, and §then finally arriving to Later Modern English. I §also try to show, from time to time, that change in §the English stress system is not an isolated §phenomenon and that how other linguistic - and also §non-linguistic - changes brought about changes in §the stress system and how stress change caused other §changes in the language. §Finally, in the last chapter, I give a short summary §of what has been said and I draw my conclusion.
